About ASPE

The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) is the leading international organization dedicated to plumbing system design professionals. Since 1964, ASPE has supported engineers, designers, contractors, code officials, manufacturers, and industry partners who are committed to advancing the profession and improving the built environment.

ASPE's mission is to advance the science and practice of plumbing engineering while fostering the professional growth of its members and promoting public health, safety, and sustainability through innovative plumbing system design.

Advancing the Profession

ASPE serves as a trusted source for technical expertise, professional development, and industry leadership. Through education, research, publications, certification programs, and networking opportunities, the Society helps members stay ahead of evolving technologies, regulations, and industry best practices.

ASPE members are recognized throughout the world for their leadership in water efficiency, sustainable design, energy conservation, and the implementation of innovative plumbing engineering solutions.

A Global Network of Professionals

With more than 7,600 members worldwide, ASPE brings together a diverse community of professionals from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the South Pacific.

This global network connects experienced engineers, designers, contractors, manufacturers, code professionals, and industry leaders who share a common goal: improving plumbing systems and advancing the profession through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing.

Local Chapters, Strong Connections

ASPE's 53 chapters throughout the United States and Canada provide members with valuable opportunities to engage at the local level. Chapters serve as the foundation of the ASPE experience, offering technical education, professional development, networking events, and peer-to-peer collaboration.

Regular chapter meetings, newsletters, and educational programs help members stay informed about emerging technologies, code updates, industry trends, and evolving design practices.

Connected Year-Round

Through ASPE Connect, members have access to a dynamic online community where they can exchange ideas, discuss technical challenges, share resources, and collaborate with industry peers across North America and beyond.

Industry-Leading Technical Resources

ASPE maintains one of the most comprehensive technical publishing programs in the plumbing engineering industry. Its flagship resource, the Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook, is widely recognized as the profession's premier reference guide, providing practical design criteria, engineering principles, and best practices across 54 chapters and four volumes.

In addition, ASPE publishes specialized technical manuals and handbooks covering topics such as domestic water heating, rainwater harvesting, siphonic roof drainage, and other critical areas of plumbing system design.

Education and Industry Events

ASPE hosts premier educational events designed to help professionals expand their expertise and stay current with changing codes, technologies, and design approaches.

The Society's Convention and Technical Symposium bring together plumbing engineers, designers, contractors, and industry experts for technical education, professional development, and networking. These events provide attendees with access to innovative ideas, practical solutions, and valuable industry connections.

Held in conjunction with the Convention, the Engineered Plumbing Exposition showcases the latest products, equipment, technologies, and services available to the plumbing engineering and design community, offering attendees a firsthand look at emerging industry innovations.

ASPE also partners with local chapters throughout the year to deliver technical seminars and educational programs that support ongoing professional growth.

Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD)

ASPE sponsors the nationally recognized Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) credential, the industry's premier certification for professionals who design engineered plumbing systems.

Developed by plumbing design professionals for plumbing design professionals, the CPD program establishes a consistent benchmark of technical knowledge, professional competence, and industry expertise. Earning the CPD designation demonstrates a commitment to excellence and helps professionals distinguish themselves within the plumbing engineering community.

The certification is independent of state-regulated Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensing programs and serves as a respected credential for both emerging and experienced professionals.

Codes, Standards, and Industry Advocacy

ASPE plays an active role in shaping the future of the plumbing engineering profession. The Society collaborates with industry organizations, code development bodies, and government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels to help advance policies, standards, and regulations that protect public health and improve system performance.

Through its ongoing involvement in code and legislative initiatives, ASPE ensures that the voice of the plumbing engineering profession is represented in critical industry discussions.

ASPE Research Foundation

Established in 1976, the ASPE Research Foundation is dedicated to advancing plumbing engineering knowledge through independent research and innovation.

The Foundation supports studies that influence water quality, conservation, system performance, public health, and building design. Its work helps drive technological advancement, informs industry standards, and contributes to the development of safer, more sustainable plumbing systems.

From protecting drinking water resources to improving building infrastructure, the Foundation's research has a lasting impact on communities and the built environment worldwide.

ASPE empowers plumbing design professionals with the knowledge, connections, resources, and credentials they need to lead the industry and shape the future of plumbing engineering.
